Weathrman is a Live Wallpaper for phones running Android 2.1.

This Live Wallpaper shows you the weather in your current location as seen through the eyes of Flickr users.

Weathrman will use your current location to fetch information about the weather conditions near you; that information is then used to find an image on flickr taken around the same time of day and in roughly the same season.

Its results are sometimes unusual; success, or failure, is ultimately dependent on Flickr’s userbase doing three important things:  geotagging their images, writing useful descriptions and tags that actually describe the weather conditions in the photo, and most importantly, on having correct metadata about when the photo was taken.

My undying love to Flickr and the photographers that are its lifeblood.

How To Use

Use is easy; set it as your active wallpaper by putting your finger on a blank bit of your Home screen and waiting until the menu pops up.  Select Wallpapers from the pop-up menu, and Live Wallpapers in the menu that follows.  Scroll down to Weathrman and set it as your active wallpaper.

When you want to force the image to refresh, or just see more information, just double-tap on an empty bit of the Home screen.

Got a problem?

The FAQ covers what goes wrong when things go wrong; if you have a problem, and don’t see it addressed in that list, you can always contact me on the support address.

I especially want to know about certain kinds of problems:

  • Image relevance issues.  Sometimes, my searches pull up inappropriate or unwanted images.  I need to know your current weather conditions, and the image you ended up with; doubletap on your backdrop for more information.
  • Crashes.  I’m happy to investigate, but I’d like to know if you’re seeing problems.  If you’ve got troubles, please do contact me; as you can tell by the rate of updates, I’m responsive, and I care.
  • Connectivity Issues.  I’ve been informed by a user that Vodafone UK blocks access to the Flickr API, and will only unblock it on request.  I’m in the process of trying to find a way to reliably tell the user that their provider is spending your hard earned cash on nose candy, but until then, I need more information.  Contact me if you have problems with the app not being able to perform flickr searches.  Future versions of this application may include sourcing images from Picasa in addition to Flickr in the hopes of limiting the impact of these carrier decisions.
